General discussions about Windows issues

Hooray! I can get rid of DOS!

I’m so happy to hear about these new groups.  I’ve been living
in a DOS nighmare for about 10 years now, and now I find out that
I can chuck it all and go to MS-Windows.  I can’t tell you how happy
I am to know that DOS, with all its limitations and antiquated
restrictions, will no longer be a part of my life.  Knowing that
MS-Windows is an Operating System has made my life complete!
An excerpt from "The MS-DOS Encyclopedia", says that an operating
system provides:
        – Storage Management
        – Processing Management
        – Security
        – Human Interface
Now this must be true since Bill Gates wrote it.  No, wait a minute,
he just wrote the foreword, which is almost two pages, so I’m sure
he gives the "I’m Bill Gates so believe me" stamp of approval to
the definition.
My question is, where’s the boot disk?  I’ve been trying to
load this guy for about 14 hours now and it’s no go.  I must have
a jumper set wrong.  Let me check "The MS-DOS Encyclopedia" (which
has the tacit approval of Bill Gates) and see what they say about
Windows:
"An operating environment is built on top of a traditional
operating system.  The operating environment provides
additional services, such as common menu and forms support,
that simplify program operation and make the user interface
more consistant.  Microsoft Windows is an operating
        environment."
Whoa.  Wait a second here.  This says that Windows isn’t an operating
system.  This says it’s an "operating environment".  I don’t under-
stand this.  This book has Bill Gates name on it, and it’s published
by Microsoft Press, so what gives?  Who started these newsgroups?
This must be some renegade group who goes against the views and
opinions of Microsoft and Bill Gates so they can create confusion
and anarchy within the computing community.  Don’t worry Bill!  We
believe you, and not some loose-cannon network sabateur!
I call for an immediate change of these groups to be consistent
with network naming convention to be called:
        comp.os.msdos.ms-windows.<whatever>
or (because I feel deep within my heart that Bill Gates would
want it so):
        comp.os.msdos.env.ms-windows.<whatever>
or perhaps, even better:
        comp.os.msdos.we’ll.call.it.whatever.we.want.so.that.people. >
will.believe.that.windows.does.more.than.just.sit.on.top.of.dos.and. >
look.pretty
Whew.  Now I’m sure that that’s something we can all agree with and
stay in line with Bill Gates’ original definition.

Not that I hate DOS (I don’t have a problem using it for years
and it serves my needs), but I’m really interested in
    running windows without a DOS.

Could you please tell us what EXACTLY you did in those 14 hours
before you managed to run Windows without DOS.

Thanks for any advice you might give us.

Good god, man, where’ve you been?  9-)

All the rest of the readers here are migrants from comp.windows.ms..
no need at all to wait for these new groups…

A little too late for that now. If you were aware of comp.windows.ms you
would doubtlessly read the charter, gotten involved in the discussion,
voted against the hierarchy, and lost.
