Is it a bad idea to frequently (constantly) change registry entries?

I’m designing an application where each "user" (this term is somewhat
loosely interpreted) will have a different set of registry entries (*) that must
be active.  So, the logical thing to do is to setup a registry file (.REG)
for each user and, as part of the startup, have the application load the
indicated registry file (via "regedit /s file").

Seems straightforward, but I’ve been told by some of the PC guys that it is
a bad idea to be frequently (constantly) changing the registry – that, like
all things Microsoft, it doesn’t re-write clean, and that it is the on-disk
equivalent of a memory leak.  Is this true?  Is it a bad idea to do it this
way?  Will it lead to the files (USER.DAT and SYSTEM.DAT) growing over time?

(*) To clarify, I mean that each user has different values for the same set
of (a very small number – like 3 or 4) keys.  The keys themselves are fixed
and known.

VxD driver auto installation

Can someone give me a code-snippet on installing a vxd automatically
(Windows 9x)?

There is no new hardware being plugged into the computer. I have an .inf
file that installs the driver fine with the "Hardware Wizard".

(1) I have heard of a method using DiInstallClass, DiInstallDevice, etc
(using VC 1.52) – code snippet would be helpful here…
(2) Somebody suggested using SetupCopyOEMInf – this makes windows "aware" of
the driver, but will not install it untill it recognizes the appropriate
hardware. Since no hardware is being plugged in here, this will not
automatically go — suggestions?
(3) Within the "new" WDM DDK there are SetupDiCallClassInstaller, SetupDi…
etc. Could these work to install a vxd (even in Win 95)? — if so, a short
code snippet would be helpful.

Thanks in advance,
Patrick.

Hidden Files

I recently went into my hard drive and noticed none of my files are
visible. I can see how many i have on the bottom but no folders appear in
the screen. This includes control panel and some other setting folders. Any
help would be appreciated.

defrag always restarting

both the scan disk and the defrag restart repeatedly. it gives me a prompt
that something is being written on the hard drive and to close all
programs. however, all my programs were closed. i restarted the computer,
and scan/defrag without opening a single application, and it gives me the
same prompt again.

webcam and scanner crashing w98?

Can anyone help me to solve this problem ?
I have installed a Logitech webcam (Quickcam express USB) and it
normally works for a few seconds then the system crashes (Win 98). I’ve
related this problem with a similar problem with my scanner (an old
Mustek), in fact after 5 or 6 "scannings" the system crashes the same
way.
I think it’s something to do with memory handling by win98 or my PC (AMD
K-2/266 64RAM) but with my knowledge I can’t go any further.
Is there a solution less tragic than change the computer or reinstall
w98?
Ciao

Re: Can not Defrag Drive C: !!

Try this, start windows in safe mode and defrag. If this does not work
start computer in pure dos mode delete applog folder in windows folder.
This should solve the problem.

Win98 full install from 95/98 upgrade cd

My hd bombed this weekend – I want to install Win98 on a brand new disk.

I upgraded from Win95 to Win 98 with the upgrade cd (I still have
this…) and I remember reading somewhere the instructions on how to get
an OEM type full install of Win98 from the upgrade disk.  Can anyone
help me on this please ?

Thanks

Peter
