In*A*Vision –> Micrografx Designer conversion?

My father used In*A*Vision a while back (for LAN layout drawings),
but has now converted to the (IMHO) much better program Micrografx Designer.
All his old drawings are still in In*A*Visions rather uncompatible
format, In*A*Vision doesn’t have the ability to store the drawings
in another format, and other programs can’t convert from that format either.
HELP! (He really hates the idea of having do redraw all of them in Designer)

So, are there any good convertion programs that can take care of this
problem?

Win 3.1 SVGA 256 driver??

I currently use the 16 color SVGA driver that came with Win3.1 but
would really like to have one which supports 256 colors.  I have a
board with the Trident 8900 and the driver which came with Win3.0
doesn’t support fonts and mouse control in non-Windows apps under 3.1.
Does Microsoft have a ‘generic’ SVGA/256 color driver available?
Anyone else have a Trident board?

Thanks.

Postscript files from Write and Paintbrush

        I have a 386-40 with Windows but I don’t have a
printer.  Is there a way that I can output from the
windows applications to a Postscript file, so that I
can Laser it?

Fonts are from HELL _or_ HELP I'M BEING BURIED

Well, the above kinda sums up my situation. :)

Anyway, in a little more detail i’ll try to explain my problems.
I’ve been doing all the sytem junk on a Novell Network (leaning as
I go of course.. the best way to fly "by the seat of your pants").

I’ve used worked with windows a good bit now, both at home and in the
lab.  I’m even taking up programming in it (for better or worse Turbo
C++ for windows here I come).

Currently the only problem I’m having is with the fonts. Something i’ve
never had at home (only having one printer and all… or maybe i’ve just
lucked out before now).

We have three printers connected to the network (and will soon be adding
another — as soon as i figure out how (see the above about "pants") to
connect it correctly).  (comments on printing with novell appreciated: the
new printer is on a nearby appletalk zone and is excessable from Unix.
The imfamous ‘they’ want is also excessable from the IBM network. shrug.)

Anyway:  each printer seems to have its own sets of fonts that work for
it.  In MicroSoft Word 1.1a the display is *not* WYSIWYG.  It often wraps
in what appears to be 3 or 4 inches (it will print quasi ok)… or doesn’t
wrap till well past the margin mark.  In both cases printing is ussually
ok, but some times it too will be a bit off the mark.

The current printers are:  Deskjet 500, Epson 86e 9pin, HP laser printer
and soon to have a apple laserwriter.

MY QUESTIONS: (or "WHAT BOOK DO I GET TO FIND OUT ABOUT…")

        will ATM help?
why does the Deskjet installation want to install fonts of its
own??  and "screen" fonts as well… why?
what are the fonts i can get to from the Control Panel?  Does every
thing use them? shouldn’t they?
how are all the applications and fonts interacting?  how *should* they
be interacting?

Is this system supposed to be object oriented (ie the fonts are
objects)??  Or is it *not* object oriented and that is my problem??

What will TrueType do to this mess if i upgrade these thing to
MSWord 2.0 and windows 3.1???? (something we may do this summer).

Thank for any and all information.  Please mail me!!!
(if there is interest i will summarize)

Windows, an OS? (not a pro-OS/2 post)

I am a die-hard Windows 3.1 user.  I have no plans for upgrading (yes,
I would call it an upgrade!) to OS/2 because I am not convinced that
it has full 3.1 support nor do I have the necessary system, but there
is one thing that I am sure about.  Windows 3.1 is not an OS!  I mean,
when was the last time that you booted up without DOS?  Can a computer
have two OS’s running on top of each other, when one of them is dependent
on the other?  Let`s not kid ourselves, Win 3.1 is not an OS, but it is
a great GUI that I use every day, nor is OS/2.0 the answer to all of
our problems.  I am just sick of hearing about Windows being an OS!
Do we know what an OS is?  And to all you OS/2 users who forced this
stupid debate, go home until OS/2 2.0 runs on my 386 without 6 megs
of RAM!

Terminal-Program/Microlink

I just recently upgraded to 3.1 from 3.0  I have a problem though.
The terminal program dont work.  I cant use my modem from windows at all.
Same thing for microlink (a Windows accesory in my file)

My modem works fine with other programs like 3.0 terminal, but it doesnt
for this one.  I have checked all the switches, and comm setups, and
modem command setups and they are correct.  The modem works, cuz Prodigy
works ok.  Any "secrets" I may be missing out somehow?   Thanks alot in
advance

I need to find a decent calendar app. for Windows 3.1 that can handle

at ftp.cica.indiana.edu?

Hooray! I can get rid of DOS!

I’m so happy to hear about these new groups.  I’ve been living
in a DOS nighmare for about 10 years now, and now I find out that
I can chuck it all and go to MS-Windows.  I can’t tell you how happy
I am to know that DOS, with all its limitations and antiquated
restrictions, will no longer be a part of my life.  Knowing that
MS-Windows is an Operating System has made my life complete!
An excerpt from "The MS-DOS Encyclopedia", says that an operating
system provides:
        – Storage Management
        – Processing Management
        – Security
        – Human Interface
Now this must be true since Bill Gates wrote it.  No, wait a minute,
he just wrote the foreword, which is almost two pages, so I’m sure
he gives the "I’m Bill Gates so believe me" stamp of approval to
the definition.
My question is, where’s the boot disk?  I’ve been trying to
load this guy for about 14 hours now and it’s no go.  I must have
a jumper set wrong.  Let me check "The MS-DOS Encyclopedia" (which
has the tacit approval of Bill Gates) and see what they say about
Windows:
"An operating environment is built on top of a traditional
operating system.  The operating environment provides
additional services, such as common menu and forms support,
that simplify program operation and make the user interface
more consistant.  Microsoft Windows is an operating
        environment."
Whoa.  Wait a second here.  This says that Windows isn’t an operating
system.  This says it’s an "operating environment".  I don’t under-
stand this.  This book has Bill Gates name on it, and it’s published
by Microsoft Press, so what gives?  Who started these newsgroups?
This must be some renegade group who goes against the views and
opinions of Microsoft and Bill Gates so they can create confusion
and anarchy within the computing community.  Don’t worry Bill!  We
believe you, and not some loose-cannon network sabateur!
I call for an immediate change of these groups to be consistent
with network naming convention to be called:
        comp.os.msdos.ms-windows.<whatever>
or (because I feel deep within my heart that Bill Gates would
want it so):
        comp.os.msdos.env.ms-windows.<whatever>
or perhaps, even better:
        comp.os.msdos.we’ll.call.it.whatever.we.want.so.that.people. >
will.believe.that.windows.does.more.than.just.sit.on.top.of.dos.and. >
look.pretty
Whew.  Now I’m sure that that’s something we can all agree with and
stay in line with Bill Gates’ original definition.
